Day 23
Aljmas to Zmajevac
Day 47 miles
Journey 812 miles
We ordered breakfast at the Guest House and had an amazing array of home cured meats, fried eggs and bread fresh from the oven. The other half of the pig. Even the cherry juice was homemade. It was quite a challenge to start cycling.
The large town of the day was Osijek, where we had coffee and stocked up on food. Slightly more traffic on the route to Osijek. It was a beautiful day and in the afternoon we took the slightly longer route through a nature reserve, covering some of the Danube wetlands, the Kopacki rit National park, it was a beautiful ride. The area is home to 44 species of fish, and the wildlife includes boar and 290 species of birds. Excitement of the day was having 2 boar run out across the road in front of us. Too quick for a photo.
Zmajevac is a sleepy village and a nice Pension renovated from a Hungarian farm over 150 years old. We sat in the garden and ate, and talked with our hosts over drinks and supper.
