We​ said farewells to our Croatian family  on a hot morning with 4 long steep hills to climb over the next 20, kms. The countryside was delightful, arable land, rolling hills, fruit trees, cereal crops and vineyards.

Then we came to Vukavar, this town suffered a lot of fighting in the war of the 1990’s  when the town was under siege for 3 months. There is still a lot of evidence of war damage, and the water tower that was hit over 600 times, but did not fall has been left as a memorial, now with a children’s playground at the bottom. Gaps where old buildings were destroyed are gradually being filled with modern architecture.

Our overnight stop was a small guest house by the Danube, where we ate what seemed like half a pig in a magnificent evening mixed grill. They kept pigs and everything was homemade.
