Day 46
Journey 276
The weather was getting hotter – 28° by the time we arrived at Monthermé. It was lovely having wall to wall sunshine again, but we were very glad it was a flat route. We were at the start of the Trans Ardennes cycle way. The Meuse goes into a narrow valley as it winds through the French Ardennes, with a cycle route alongside the river for 130km.

We made a sortie into Sedan to find a replacement saucepan in the nearby LeClerc hypermarket. This was a low point of the day. Most of the population of Sedan seemed to be in LeClerc and it took 20 minutes in a checkout queue to pay the 4€ for the saucepan. Sedan was traffic ridden, no obvious centre and after coffee in a bar on a busy roundabout we went back to the peace of the cycle path.
The Meuse in the Ardennes

By the time we arrived at Monthermé we were both feeling a bit hot. 28° on the pharmacy thermometer.
The campsite was fine. Lots of people there at the start of a long bank holiday weekend. Cycle tourists and camping cars. A good little site for the night beside the Meuse. We had a shady spot and made curry for our meal. It turned out quite well. As dusk fell 3 microlights flew overhead.
